Disrupting whiteness introductory workshop

Saturday 26th April 2025

This event is now past. If you'd like us to let you know about future events please contact us with your contact details.

This is a workshop for group analysts/therapists/counsellors who identify as white to come together to study and reflect upon what it means to be socialized into a white body in a society dominated by structural racism and to develop awareness of how we are implicated in

perpetuating a system that maintains our privilege and causes harm. Whilst the day won't focus specifically on how that impacts upon our therapeutic work we imagine that this will also be present.

The day will include discussion of a range of texts and media (notified in advance)  which give historical and sociological context to the origin of ‘whiteness’ and raise questions about how this is relevant to our work as therapists and group analysts.

Through small and large groups we will look at how the social designation of ‘white’ impacts our external and internal worlds and explore with each other our emotional responses noticing what our physical and emotional reactions are telling us about how racism lives within us. The aim of the day is to bring more awareness to our actions, our ways of relating and our thoughts. We aim to foster a

non-judgemental, supportive yet gently challenging space within which we can

develop new perspectives about ourselves and the world we live in.

The day will be led by Sally Bild and Debra Nash and supported by other members of the Disrupting Whiteness Working Group.

Fees:

IGA members and students:      £55

Non-IGA members:     £70

Your fee goes towards developing and extending the reach of this work. This includes the supervision for the Disrupting Whiteness Group and the Diaspora Peer Support Group. We don't want anyone to be excluded from this event due to financial reasons. If you'd like to attend but are not in a position to pay the above fee then please pay what you can. “I have no creative use for guilt, yours or my own. Guilt is only another way of avoiding informed action, of buying time out of the pressing need to make clear choices, out of the approaching storm that can feed the earth as well as bend the trees.”
